Story
Last week, I spent a wonderful day at The Childrens Trust, with my friend Gina whose daughter Alice, aged 16, is severely disabled.
Alice suffered a brain injury at birth, and as a result she has complex mental and physical needs. She cannot speak, walk or see and is fed by a tube into her tummy.
The Children’s Trust (www.thechildrenstrust.org.uk) provides specialist care, education, rehabilitation and respite facilities for some of the UK’s most severely disabled children and teenagers. It also cares for those who have acquired a severe brain injury through accident or illness.
During my visit, I witnessed a Music Therapy class, which was incredibly moving. Six severely disabled children, some able to touch, some able to listen, some able to watch, and all communicating in their own way as the musical story unfolded.
Alice needs full-time one-to-one care and it was amazing and somewhat humbling to see the incredible care and attention she receives from the wonderful staff at The Children’s Trust.
I was simply blown away by the dedication of the staff at the Trust who provide an enriching and accessible environment which for many families is a lifeline.
Each year over 5000 children suffer an acquired brain injury but most do not have access to the specialist help available at The Children’s Trust.
The money raised will enable the Trust to help many more children and families by developing services in the community. This will allow more children to benefit from the skills and experience they have developed.
With your support we can make a huge difference to children with brain injuries.
