Story
Macmillan Cancer Support has been a cause close to our hearts for many years having lost close family and friends to cancer at young ages. Sharon was also fortunate enough to work for Macmillan for several years and hear and see the amazing work they do to support individuals and their families.
You always hope that you’ll never personally need their support, however that day came for Sharon when she was unfortunately diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 51 on the 6th May 2022. It came as a complete shock to us but Sharon counts herself fortunate in that it was early stage, contained and treatable. So following surgery and radiotherapy last summer, Sharon then received the all clear.
The support she received from The Mermaid Breast Care Centre, The Macmillan Cove Information Centre and The Sunrise Cancer Treatment Centre at our hospital in Cornwall was amazing last year and their support to Sharon continues. Alongside dealing with Sharon’s cancer diagnosis, last year we also had to cope with Chris’s Mum sadly passing away and his Dad’s dementia advancing and having to make the difficult decision to move him into a care home.
So while 2022 was an awful year for us on many fronts, we decided to take on a challenge this year as a focus to get fit again and raise some vital funds for Macmillan. On the 8th July 2023, We will be undertaking The Gower Peninsular Mighty Hike Marathon for Macmillan, walking 26 miles in one day!
Training has started and we have no excuse living in Cornwall to practice distance and elevations on the coast paths!
