We Aid vulnerable children in Uganda to to improve their lives in many ways

Story

Please help me to inspire young kids in Uganda with science!

This autumn I'll be heading to Ugandan schools supported by Starchild with exciting science activities and science materials for their classrooms.

Starchild strives to help every child realise their inner star. With the Starchild Science Project we aim to show them this is a literal statement, not just a figurative one:

Every atom in your body came from a star that exploded and atoms in your left hand probably came from a different star than your right hand. It really is the most poetic thing I know about physics: You are all stardust. - Lawrence Krauss

This project will take science and science/art activities to primary and secondary schools in Uganda (see more about these schools on their website here). We will inspire children to recognise the creativity in science and how science positively affects their lives. It will raise aspirations, especially in young people, to pursue science, if not as a career then as a relevant interest.

Our aim is to raise £3000

Of this £1500-1750 will be spent on flights (approx. £550), accommodation (approx. £560) and local transport (approx. £500). The rest will be spent on activity materials, basic resources and training delivery (teachers and academics travel and time – all
my time is donated, of course). Basic resources include not just science resources but also the shelves to store materials on.

Scheduled for Autumn 2017 (dates to be determined by the school term – we will post them up asap), a diverse programme of activities and workshops will be delivered on aspects of science that influence the childrens’ lives. Activities will be designed for continued use with minimal and available resources. The project also plans to deliver
professional development for teachers including detailed advice on developing the science content.

In the lead up to and during the visit we will be making links with researchers in the University of Makerere in Kampala in order to not only encourage the sustainability of the project but to also empower local academics to deliver science engagement in their surrounding
communities. The value of presenting communities with inspirational role models from within is key to promoting the value and accessibility of science and education in general.

If you have contacts in Makerere Uni, please put us in touch!

Thanks for taking the time to read this, and I hope you can help me to encourage these kids to reach for the stars.

We are not figuratively but literally stardust.  - Neil Degrasse Tyson

Starchild was set up by Michaela Foster Marsh in memory of her adopted Ugandan brother Frankie Marsh. Starchild believes that every child deserves to be loved, cared for, fed and educated. In Uganda, sadly many have no one to provide basic needs. Starchild brings aid to the most vulnerable.
