WE HATE CANCER!

PETER JOHN GROVES - our amazing dad!

My dad didn’t want many people to know when he was initially diagnosed with cancer on the 26th April 2022 but that day will forever be in our memory. Having gone in for seemingly routine camera of the throat he was diagnosed with oesophagus cancer and told straight away that it was terminal.

Quite how my dad felt at that time is difficult to fathom but I can tell you right now that the pain our family felt was indescribable. My dad was one of the most selfless, generous and loving people ever. Unbelievably I was lucky enough to be his son. Proud doesn’t even come close.

Our dad passed away on the 10th August 2022 having fought so hard to do everything possible to beat this terrible disease. Unfortunately due to having sepsis he was unable to have any chemotherapy or treatment for the cancer. Even a couple of days before he was still having a conversation with me about how he could get home which sadly he never did.

My sister Linsey and I made the decision some weeks ago to run Manchester half marathon in October to raise money for the Christie. On the three occasions my dad went there to talk about the possibility of chemo to prolong his life, the care was incredible and you could feel the genuine warmth of the staff there. The money that they raised throughout various projects goes into research into how to beat the disease and stop people suffering like my dad did. 

Linsey and I have both run 10k’s but obviously a half marathon is a bigger ask. That being said if my dad and other people can go through what we have witnessed over the last few months and I’m sure we can complete a half marathon!

Our dad will always be our hero…love you dad x
