Story

Final update:

Dear All,
I thought I'd give you a quick update on the BUPA 10000 on Monday, now I've recovered a little.
The run was a fantastic event, with over 13000 runners and at least one donkey!
It was an experience, where you just loose yourself in the atmosphere, the people and the music.
A resemblance of the Notting Hill Carnival, but where the bands and cheerleaders are directed at you.
I managed to run the whole course in just over an hour.
I would like to put the good time down to being coached by professional runners and hard training, but I can't.
The coaching I received was fantastic, however, what it really came down to was trying to beat 12999 others
to the only working toilet back at Green Park! LOL
(They had even closed the pubs along the route to stop us getting side tracked!)

Please find below a couple of website links.
One is for the BUPA 10000 site, where you can search for times (They are still being ratified).
The other link is to a Facebook photo of some ABF colleagues (Vic centre, James right) and myself.

I would once again like to thank you for supporting the ABF and my 10Km run.
Cheers
Steve

Hi,

For those of you that don't know me, I'm Steve, although other nicknames have included "Wheels" to my personal friends, "Blagger" to my skirmishing buddies, & in my larger days, "Shrek" to my work colleagues.

After suffering a couple of life altering injuries, I put on a "little" weight. I was advised by my quack that the injuries wouldn't heal if I stayed at my heavier weight, so after a bit of deep reflection, I decided to go on a fasting type diet.

Two years ago (Nov 2008) I started off the diet weighing in at 25'ish stone, and a year later, after loosing half my body weight, I joined a gym to help me build up my strength again & tone up a little.

I started looking for my next challenge, with the view of finally getting rid of the beer belly, & proving to myself I can be fit.

This where the ABF 10K run comes in. I have never run on the road before, and I'm hoping that this run will be the start of a new pastime for me. Training on a treadmill in the gym has been harder than I originally thought, so after seeking some advice, I am told that road running is a completely different beast. I have found a running club that meets on a Wednesday evening at Paddington, so I'm hoping I can just keep up with them.

Cheers, Steve

Update 1: I've been to a couple of Running club meetings now, and I have to say that even though it's much harder work, the mental outlook is amazing. Tim, the coach, is great, and really motivates you. Running in a group does lead to a little bit of competitiveness, and watching out for traffic and other pedestrians seems to take your mind away from aching muscles! Marching on...........

Update 2: After some expert advice from Tim, managed to do 6k on a treadmill in half an hour. I'm going to try to beat that this week, but haven't decided how yet. A month to go, and hobbling on.....

Update 3: Just got home from the race. Haven't got a clue about the time, just know that I managed to keep running throughout. It was a great atmosphere, and all the ABF crowd met up after and enjoyed a quick diet coke in the pub. Once again, thanks to everyone for their support and money. Will let you know the time when I get it from the BUPA website. Cheers Steve
