There is a housing crisis in Britain. Hundreds of thousands
of people are looking for homes, developers are urgently seeking to buy land and local authorities are under pressure from the Government to provide them.
Many of these new homes need to be designed to meet the varied needs of over 12 million disabled people across the UK. The urgency in addressing the need for more accessible housing is apparent.
However, for local councillors, council officers and ministers, accurately assessing the required level of accessible housing need is difficult. That is why the leading disability charity Papworth Trust has teamed up with Oxford Brookes University to develop a tool that can be used by local councils, to more credibly establish local need for disabled people.
I want to support this important piece of work.
We already know that a disabled person is six times more likely to be employed if their home is accessible, and their healthcare needs are also reduced as a consequence.
Helping local authorities to more expertly help disabled people and developers in their areas is at the heart of my support for this campaign.
That is why I am taking part in the Liverpool Rock ‘N Roll
5k on Saturday 28th May to raise money for the research for this
important tool, and I would appreciate your support in donating whatever you have to support me and this project.
