Ehlers-Danlos Support UK improves quality of life for people living with the Ehlers-Danlos syndromes (EDS). We work across the UK to support, advise and inform those living with the condition and the medical professionals working with them.

Story

Elhers-Danlos syndromes (EDS) are a group of rare conditions
that affect connective tissue. EDS can affect people in different ways. For some, the condition is relatively mild, while for others their symptoms can be disabling. Some of the rarer types can be life-threatening. Symptoms may include loose joints, fragile skin, muscle pain, muscle fatigue, benign growth on pressure areas, chronic pain, collapsed lung, heart valve problems, chronic
degenerative joint disease, and more.

We, Paige, Hannah and Amy, are running 10k on behalf of our younger brother Tom and all those who suffer from this disorder. Tom’s now 15 and was diagnosed with EDS at age 11, and from a very young age has lived with chronic pain every so often, struggling to walk, severe joint pain/ swelling, and more. With the help of doctors and physiotherapists, he has been able to manage his symptoms better, but not without continuous struggle.

EDS has really affected Tom at home and at school which is
why it is so important to us that more educating and awareness is given to EDS within schools, so that children with EDS are provided with ongoing support in school too. There is still a great misunderstanding and lack of awareness around EDS in general, which is why it is so important to us to raise money that will be
contributed towards improving the lives of EDS sufferers, including our brother.
