The Guildford and South Surrey branch of PDUK fund people in the area with Parkinson's to access support in the form of respite care, social groups, choir and exercise groups. Due to lockdown all services have had to move online but they continue to do a fantastic job in trying to reach out to as many people as possible including phoning families unable to get online. The branch fully fund Physiotherapy assessments for people just diagnosed with Parkinson's and those just joining the exercise groups for the 1st time to ensure they are tailored to their needs. They also subsidise the group sessions and have historically paid the majority. However, funds are running out and the pandemic has caused lots of difficulties for charities such as PDUK with fundraising being affected so much.
The idea for this event came completing a lockdown#2 challenge in Nov-Dec 2020 where as a team they 'walked' to Vallender in France, which is twinned with Cranleigh where Surrey Hills Rehab is based.
Exercise is the only known 'medicine' thought to slow down Parkinson's - but unlike medications has no side effects. So exercising through lockdown has been a challenge but this group has gone from strength to strength. Many of this group have been combining working from home and looking after their young families. Some of which are teachers having to teach and homeschool their own children too.
So SHR and the Saturday morning Young PD Fit group came up with the idea of doing a socially distanced walk over the 3 Surrey Hills peaks for World Parkinson's Day 11th April 2021.
The 3 hills are Box Hill, Leith Hill and Holmbury Hill with a total ascent of 978m. Some of the group will do just 1 hill, some will do all 3, some may take 1 day, some may take 3 days. We hope that following pandemic restrictions at the time we will be able to celebrate in some form at the top of one of the hills and enjoy seeing each other in real 3D life again!
