Team Outrageous For Haven 24.5 miles in 11 and a half hours
23rd June....... What an awesome day!! We had sunshine and a calm sea for our swim to France. The sunshine lasted but the calm sea did NOT!
We set off from Samphire Hoe at 07:25 Swim order was Claire, Maddy, Ali & Guy. CSA rules insist you stick to the order and complete your hour.
Maddy's mum Jane was our team mascot!!!
The water was 14 degrees - positively steamy. The current was not too strong at this stage.
We made really steady progress, hitting half way about 1 o'clock. Into the second shipping lane and the jellyfish started to put in an appearance, thankfully they were not on the surface - but very spooky.
It stayed sunny but started to get quite choppy as we were starting our third swims. By now we were racing to catch the tide, working very hard in some very lumpy water and the current was much stronger than expected, but we pressed on covering 2 miles or so in each swim - Fantastic progress! - we enter the French inland waters and the French coast is within our grasp.
We didn't quite land the swim, we were within 2 miles of the coast.
Disappointment aside, amazing experience, amazing team mates.
Really, swimming the channel is tough and I am very very proud of my Outrageous team.
Thank you sooooooo much to everyone who has supported us. The comments on justgiving have been a constant encouragement to me.
We are very close to our target so please don't think it is too late. Every contribution will take us closer and help to build a life-changing orphanage.
