Story
Hi all
I am running the London marathon in April next year, a huge challenge for myself to raise money for Alzheimer’s Society a charity close to my heart.
Like so many other families, Alzheimer’s has affected my family, taking my gran when I was younger and then later on my husband’s dad at young age. I hoped that would be the last time this cruel disease touched my life.
Sadly at the start of this year, our family got the diagnosis that my mum at the age of 64 had early onset Alzheimer’s. The news hit us like a tidal wave, devastating, and hard to accept. My mum has always been my rock, the one I turn to for comfort, wisdom, or simply a cup of tea, a chat and a hug. The thought of losing parts of her bit by bit is something I’m still struggling to come to terms with.
Yet, true to her spirit, she refuses to let the diagnosis define her. She’s determined to live fully, adapting when challenges occur and to laugh often. She is making the most of every moment while she still can and creating magical memories. Her humour continues to shine through even on the darkest days, and we often find ourselves laughing together in the face of difficulty, because sometimes, laughter really is the best medicine.
Running has become my lifeline, it’s helping me stay grounded, focused, and giving me the space to stay emotionally strong during this ever changing and uncertain time. Every mile I run is for her, my family and for every family walking this painful path.
If you’re able to donate, your support would mean the world. Every contribution goes to this incredible charity that helps families like mine navigate the challenges of Alzheimer’s with compassion and care, providing essential research and resources. Thank you for your kindness and support.
At Alzheimer’s Society we’re working towards a world where dementia no longer devastates lives. We do this by giving help to those living with dementia today, and providing hope for the future.
