2023 was my biggest year of challenges starting with the David goggins 4 miles every 4 hours for 48 hours raising nearly 2 grand for Malaya. I then completed my first marathon at bewl water in May 2023 then my first ultra marathon of 100km in September 2023.
My dad passing in his sleep of a heart attack in 2019 along with being massively overweight was a kick start.
My close friendship with Buster and seeing the incredible determination, courage and strength of Malaya lit the flame to motivate me and get me going.
To see the hurdles Malaya has had to jump and overcome through huge operations and just everyday life really inspired me. Not the fact that she just had to face and overcome them but mainly the outstanding attitude she took them on with. Never making excuses but taking every fight on with a positive outlook and a determination to overcome unlike anything I have ever seen before.
My main motivator with the running came through David goggins and reading both of his incredible books showed me that anything can be achieved with just getting your trainers on and just getting started.
When I first started out I was 135kg, massively over weight and having chest pains at times due to poor diet and lack of exercise.
When I first started I could barely run a mile as I'm sure most people who start running can atest to but it was surprising how quick improvements came.
As the improvements came so did my desire to show people what can be done through hard work, consistency and discipline.
I am not a runner, I've never been a good sportsman or athlete, to be honest I'm just a very average person. And that's what made me gravitate towards David goggins, because that's how he started out. And seeing what he has achieved really made me think anything was possible.
That alongside my faith in Jesus Christ who has helped me overcome so many hurdles and the impact Malaya has on me everyday helped me to achieve what I did in 2023.
2024 was a poor year for me training wise and I really couldn't get motivated like I was in 2022 and 2023 to take on a challenge and if I'm being honest was really disappointed in myself.
In July 2024 my partner and I found out the news that our beautiful daughter had Spina bifida when going for our 20 week scan.
It really knocked both of us sideways but with the love and support of friends like Buster and Kristine and friends from church who had gone through there own difficulties along with our faith we made the right choice not to have an abortion.
Millie Norma Grace Huggins was born in November the 6th at Kings college hospital and had her first major operation a day after being born. She was out of hospital within 2 weeks and even in the first few months of her life she has already proven the warrior she is.
Millie was the ignition and motivation to go again.
So I went back into the gym in December and decided I needed to sort myself out and get going again.
I saw the South Downs way 100 mile centurion race and signed up in February.
I am so blessed to have both Malaya and Millie in my life. They motivate me everyday.
Malaya has never once moaned to me about how hard her life is, had never made excuses about not being able to do things.
She is achieving so many great things in life.
She is taking on lead singing roles in her local singing group she joined as well as being involved in organizing events at school. Malaya just goes from strength to strength and is the most inspirational person I have ever met.
It is sad that we cannot provide many of the basic and much needed therapies for Malaya and other children like her. The costs are very expensive but also much needed so I thought the least I could do was get out there and get this 100 mile race done.
I would really love to hit a target of £5000 for Malaya to give her much needed funds to help her continue to strive forward and keep winning.
She motivates me so much and makes me so proud and I hope I can achieve this goal for her!
