I have officially joined forces with ICS Raleigh International and I am fundraising to help provide communities overseas with access to improved water sources.
On September 26th 2015, I will travel to Nicaragua in Central America where I will spend 12 weeks living and working in a rural community. The health programme I will be joining is part government funded by the Department for International Development (DFID) and is about natural resource management, water and sanitation.
Nicaragua, unfortunately, is the largest country in Central America; is water rich because of its many lakes yet is also one of the poorest countries in the region. What isn't well communicated is that particularly in rural and urban areas of Nicaragua, there is huge deprivation of a efficient and good quality drinking water.
My job, once out there, will be to build water systems and launch other self aid projects for these communities in need. In the long term, it will provide them with access to fresh water running directly to their homes as a pose to them sourcing water from open air streams which are contaminated and could cost lives.
Why I am I doing this?
Me wanting to do this particular project has a bit of a back story... I lost my dad a few years ago due to him accidentally consuming contaminated water whilst traveling and working overseas. He was only brushing his teeth!
This personal tragedy allowed me to see the impact and seriousness of dirty water including: severe sickness and pain as well as endless bouts of dialysis and other meds.
I'm doing this because water is a life source many in Nicaragua are unable to take full advantage of in the same way that we do in the UK.
I'm doing It because there needs to be positive change. Too many people are loosing loved ones.
I'm doing this for my dad.
Any money donated, I can assure you, goes directly towards the materials that will be used during the project. So please donate anything you can!
