Story

On the second anniversary of the accident that changed our lives forever the children and I have decided to double the efforts we made last year.

This year, the children are both individually going to be swimming 21 miles between the 13th July and the 20th August. This is the distance of the official swim of the English Channel. The dates are significant because it includes the run up and anxiety before Brad’s accident, then covers the time from then till his death and then finishes on the second anniversary of his funeral. While the children will be swimming 21 miles, I will be matching each of their distances totalling 42 miles. Therefore as a family we will be swimming 84 miles in 38 days, amounting to 134.4km,  meaning I will be swimming 67,200m in total 6,720 lengths of the pool and the children will be swimming 33,600m each, 3,360 lengths of the pool. This I am sure you will agree is a huge undertaking and really rather daunting!! We have got off to a good start and though there is no daily set amount, the more we can do to start with the easier the challenge will become!

As most of you are aware, Brad had his accident at 7.30 on Wednesday 17th July 2019, he was rushed to the wonderful Neuro ICU department in the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford before undergoing three brain surgeries and finally succumbing to his injuries 10 days later at 4.36pm on Saturday 27th July. He sustained massive brain trauma and ultimately had he survived we would have needed Headway for both his recovery and mental state along with their unwavering support and guidance for the families of those affected directly. Therefore for the last 24 months the children and myself have been raising money for this amazing charity, last year raising a total of just over £5,000.

I am so impressed and humbled by the children’s positivity and willingness to help others. Chloé swims competitively for her school and is a member of the Oratory Prep School swim squad, Ozzie is both competitive academically and on the sports field so doing something active in Brad’s name is super important to them both.
