Story

Who are we? - Team “Over the Hill”

Mat & Jodie Trapnell / Dave & Tracey Tasker

What are we doing?

On the 3rd November 2023 we will be attempting a 10 day trek to reach the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro! The highest mountain in Africa and the highest single free-standing mountain above sea level in the world, standing at 5896m.

The Challenge:

Mat: ‘Both Dave and I are turning 50 at the end of 2023 so we wanted to do something memorable, rewarding and challenging!! Well this will definitely be a CHALLENGE, if we reach the top no doubt it will be MEMORABLE and with all your help, support and donations will be extremely REWARDING! This is going to be a huge team effort, one we will make sure we are ready for’

Why are we doing this?

Mat: ‘In September 2016 our little boy (Harry) was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of 2yrs 9mths. As you can imagine this was a complete shock and required a very steep learning curve for all of us as a family’

Type 1 is an autoimmune condition that has no relation to diet or exercise. It’s when someone’s immune system attacks and destroys your insulin producing cells, which regulate our blood sugars. Everyone with Type 1 will either have to have multiple daily injections or use of a fixed pump to ensure their body receives the vital insulin it needs. Too much insulin injected could cause a ‘Hypo’ leading to unconsciousness and hospital treatment. Too little insulin = high blood sugars which can cause long term damage to vital organs.

Jodie: ‘We see everyday the impact Type 1 Diabetes has on Harry. Everyday there is constant injections, finger pricking, counting carbohydrates, planning and worrying. He’s such an amazing son and our hero. A cure would mean everything to us and families just like ours’
