Story

20th September 2010

Well we did it!!!  Despite injuries and viruses and the absolutely foul weather, we all made it back in just about one piece!!  Here are the results ……..

Me, Tina Gill – the oldest member of the team.  As predicted – last back!! Only of the team not the whole race J !! 2hrs 34 mins – nearly quarter of an hour off last year’s time.

Nicki Walton – Nicki put in a tremendous effort and was carrying an injury to her thigh.  She still managed a fantastic time of  2 hrs 13 minutes and wlos had plenty of time to flirt with the dishy Paratroupers !!

Tom Broadley – the baby of the team and definitely our number 1.  An amazing 1hr 45 mins – and he completed a Triathlon last weekend – well done Tom  J

Carl Murray – Corporal Murray has obviously been training in secret he romped home in under 2hrs – official time 1hr 59 mins – fantastic.

Robert Gill – Poor Rob, having been injured out of the run, copped for driving the mini bus AGAIN!!  He had to rope Wendy in as well though as we overspilled the bus and needed a car as well.  Thanks to both as it made the day so much easier for us.  We loved the 3 mile walk to the bus/car whilst dripping wet and freezing cold and hungry and thirsty ……………

Wayne Trott – Wayne, despite a false start in going to the wrong address to be picked up, came up trumps and crossed the line at a very respectable 2hrs 4 mins.  See Nicki what with Wayne and Corporal Carl we have our very own dishy paras J

Jack Kettlewell – Jack was an absolute star, his first serious run and he made it in 2hrs 12 mins – well done Jack.  See you again next year?

James Burrell – James was a little disappointed that his brother beat him but we think James is the best – 2hrs 2mins.  Well done James and the vest did fit eventually.

Phil Ravilious – Phil all the abstinence from alcohol paid off.  You have never looked so well!! A fantastic time as well 2hrs 6 mins J

Ian Smith – Fantastic Ian you did a brilliant 2hrs straight.

Despite the appalling weather all your kind thoughts and generous donations spurred us on to the finish.  Thank you all so much for your support.

Please keep watch for news of an exciting event coming up in November.

With love Tina xxxx

27th August

Well as promised – here is an update on the runners ……….

Me, Tina Gill – the oldest member of the team.  Still eating the chocolate and driving everyone mad with my moaning – but hopefully I will be there on the day.  I am sure the streets of Starbeck will be glad when I stop pounding them L

Nicki Walton – Nicki is doing brilliantly on both the training front and nagging me department!!!  Not fair when she can eat cake for England (have never seen anyone eat so much cake).

Tom Broadley – still the baby of the team and looking set to be the winner again …….. think he is hoping the massage girls will be there again J

Carl Murray – the Corporal is keeping his training secrets close to his chest.  Have only seen him partying for the last few weeks!!

Robert Gill – Looks like Rob may be injured out again – bad luck for him but good luck for us –  back to bus driving duties.  Thanks sweetheart xxx

Wayne Trott – Wayne has been giving me the most training updates and from the sound of it he will be in South Shields before the Red Arrows J  Hope you are going to keep the Hotpants under wraps though Wayne!

Jack Kettlewell – Jack is getting a bit nervous about the run but is gearing up to partying afterwards.  Doing well on the fundraising front as well!

James Burrell – James has been having a bit of trouble with his smart new Candlelighters T shirt (according to Jack) – but no where near as much trouble as he must be having with Jack !!!

Phil Ravilious – Phil is keeping very quiet and so we are hoping for great things from him!!  I am sure he will be up there with the Elite runners J

Ian Smith – Ian has been partying hard with Carl and Rob but he will give our Tom a run for his money anyway xxx

Well that is it for now.  Keep looking as we have some very exciting events coming up.  We will be so grateful for any sponsorship you feel able to give us.  Candlelighters will put every penny to very good use as Ward 10 and 10T have moved from Jimmy’s to the LGI this year and we need £500,000 to ensure the patients get all the help then need to assist them through their treatment.

Please think of us on the 19th September – we will need all the prayers and good wishes we can get!!

With love Tina xxxx

Tina Gill

It is again my privilege to post this Blog.  The reasons for the Team doing the Great North Run are the same as last year.  I would like to take the opportunity to tell you about our lovely Nick, the brilliant team who are doing the Great North Run with me and of course Candlelighters, the wonderful charity that helped us so much during Nick’s illness.

Firstly Nick – an amazing son, who bounced into this world and hit it running.  He was a peace maker, full of determination and grit and above all had a smile that could lift the lowest of spirits.  He was also cheeky, strong willed full of fun and extremely clever.  He battled spine, lung and bone cancer for 4 and a half years and never complained.  He surrounded himself with family and friends and embraced all that life could offer him.  He thought Candlelighters were wonderful and they gave him so many good times.  Nick had the best friends ever and have been given wonderful memories of Nick, not least the ones from a holiday in Bridlington in a Candlelighters Chalet - a week of late night hilarity and days full of love and laughter.

Nick had such a happy life, blessed with people who loved him, people who wanted to help him, people who were inspired by him.  But most important of all, Nick drew his strength from the love that surrounded him.

He left us with such a legacy of love and light and he showed us that nothing in the world can stop you achieving the things you want to do.

This is why we have to do what we can to help charities such as Candlelighters.  They not only help and support the families of all young people with cancer in Yorkshire, they fund massive amounts of research and professionals in order to find cures for this cruel disease.

During Nicks illness Candlelighters supported us emotionally and financially, helping us towards travel, clothing and equipment which was needed to help Nick lead a normal life.  They also funded much need treats for him, very necessary for someone undergoing gruelling treatment, knowing that the chances of survival are not good.  This year the

Nick died nearly three years ago on the 6th July 2007, he was aged 17. His only regret was that he never knew what happened to Harry Potter.

We run in celebration of his life x

Well that is Nick and Candlelighters.  Now the team (in brief I promise)

Me, Tina Gill – the oldest member of the team.  I wanted to eat chocolate this year but no – apparently I am running again L At least the rest of the Team will not be last.

Nicki Walton – Nicki has been with me throughout my ‘running’ career.  She never loses patience with me (although there is always a first time!!).  She was very fast last year and I know intends to obtain a PB this year.

Tom Broadley – the baby of the team and a seasoned Marathon runner so this will be a piece of cake J.  He was the first home of the team last year and will not want to lose that place.

Carl Murray – also known as ‘The Corporal’ – another of last year’s team.  He is an old married man though this year!!

Rob Gill – Nick’s biggest brother (in age not height!).  Rob was injured out of the run last year and had to drive the mini bus instead!  He is hoping to at least beat his mother this year!

Wayne Trott – Wayne thinks he is doing a 5k fun run (Bless!!) x

Jack Kettlewell – A youngster from the office, Jack is a new and very welcome addition to the Team.  He is so serious he has asked for new trainers for his birthday!!

James Burrell – According to Jack, James has promised to complete the run in less than 2 hours, WITHOUT ANY TRAINING!!

Phil Ravilious – Phil is a long standing family friend and will be chasing Robert round the course (or more likely leading him!).

Steve Pilling – The latest recruit!  Think he is fast though!!

Ian Smith – Have only seen Ian in training at Leeds Festival but I am sure he will give The Corporal a run for his money!!

Well that is the team and we will keep you up to date with the training exploits. Hopefully we will be able to make you smile enough to feel you would like to donate to Candlelighters.

Love Tina x
