Story

At 11:50am on Thursday 16th May, my wife Angie and I welcomed our Gorgeous Baby Boy into the world. Oliver John Bertie Tierney. Our little OllyBear. 🐻

Olly arrived 12 weeks earlier than expected so he was taken to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit where he received outstanding care from the nurses and doctors. These incredible people would come to be known as "Olly's Aunties" – he enjoyed being the centre of attention as he always seemed to have the lovely ladies of NICU fuss over him and quite rightly so, he really was a heartbreaker.

If you have never visited the NICU ward, it can be a pretty scary and daunting place especially when you see how much equipment is required for the tiniest of babies. The work that is done in this unit is outstanding but it wouldn’t be possible without the care and commitment from the neonatal team.

Sadly & unexpectedly on Tuesday 21st May at 11:37am our precious little Olly passed away in his Mummy & Daddy’s arms.

We are totally heartbroken and even though we only had 5 short days with our little OllyBear, he brought so much joy and touched the hearts of so many people, which we know he will continue to do as we keep his memory alive.

Our feisty little warrior fought so hard to stay with us right until the very end and as his Mummy & Daddy we are so incredibly proud of our little Bear for the fight that he put up to help the doctors try and keep him with us.

For any parent the loss of a child is tragic, however as Angie and I were able to be present when the medical team worked tirelessly to save our precious baby boy, we were able to see first hand the care, dedication and commitment the neonatal staff gave our little OllyBear.  💙💙

The unbelievable care and kindness exhibited by staff is not unique to just our family. The remarkable neonatal staff work around the clock, giving 24 hour care to many premature babies, day in, day out. Some babies are in the unit short-term, while others require constant monitoring over a number of months and the staff ensure that there is a welcoming, friendly, warm atmosphere for every family who enters the very frightening world of NICU.

We therefore want to show our appreciation of the exceptional work done by the neonatal staff by raising as much money as possible to go towards the facilities of the unit. In some small way, we want to give back to those who have gave us so much.

In order to give back to the NICU myself along with my brother in law Andrew and two friends Nathan and Thomas are taking part in the Pedal for Scotland bike ride to raise funds for the unit to allow them to invest and purchase new equipment to help both the babies and their families who will require to stay in NICU.

By raising money for this wonderful unit we hope to create a lasting legacy for Olly and which we hope will help other families who will find themselves in the unenviable position that Angie & I along with our family found ourselves in.

Any donation would be greatly appreciated.
