Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit our just giving page.
My name is Sue Guilmant. Ten of my colleagues are doing to Tommy Godwin challenge on the 27th September 2015, to help raise funds for the Marie Curie Hospice West Midlands. If it is at all possible we would like to try and raise enough monies to pay for the hospice to run for a day.
Why? Where do I start? My late Husband Darren was moved to the Marie Curie Hospice West Midlands, end of February 2015, after I was told that my husband's Adenocarcinoma had grown back into his brain.
Due to the brain injury acquired during a partial resection of his cancer back in August 2014, he never left his room in the hospital, and was under 24 hour care, because of the complexity of his needs.
When I was told the cancer had advanced into another part of his brain, I contacted the hospice, and along with the support of his hospital, Marie Curie Hospice agreed to take him and within a week, he was there. A few days later he looked so much better and within a week they had repaired his NHS wheelchair, and got him in it and we were taking him around the gardens. Why is this so important? Because, this was the first time in over six months that he had been outside of his hospital room. Can you imagine, what it must have felt like? Feeling fresh air and the sun on your face, after six months..
The team at the hospice, are fantastic, I cannot put into words what they did for my husband. But that small gesture of allowing him to be in his wheelchair and outside, meant so much to him.
Even now, six months after his death, the bereavement team still supports me, and will support other family members if they need it.
Marie Curie Hospice West midlands offers specialist care for people living with a terminal illness and support for families, completely free. Their in-patient unit has 24 private beds. They also have a fully-equipped day service department and some services offered in patients' homes.
