Story
December 11th 2022 will be the 10th anniversary of my Stem Cell Transplant for Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (a type of blood cancer). It has been quite a journey.
The amazing dedication, support and care of the Haematology team at King's has meant so much to me. Without them, my journey would have ended long ago.
As a way of saying ‘thank you’, I am raising money for the Haematology Outpatients Department. This provides day-care services including clinics and supportive therapies plus other essential haematology services required by outpatients needing treatment for blood cancers, Sickle Cell Anemia and other blood related disorders.
After my transplant I was a regular outpatient for over two years. I had to undergo a range of invasive and tiring treatments including blood transfusions, bone marrow biopsies, electrolyte infusions and venesections. I continue to attend an annual clinic and will do so for the rest of my life.
King’s gave me a future and now I want to give something back. I would really appreciate your support…
My Challenge: Ten X 10
I have set myself a challenge to walk 100 kilometres by completing ten x10kms walks over a period of 10 weeks (October 2 - December 11). I hope to raise £10,000 - that's a lot of 10's - but your donations, however small or large, will help me get there (or at least some of the way).
Below are the dates and locations of my walks. I will be joined by friends and family who will accompany me along the way. Please let me know if you would like to come along too. I will post weekly updates with maps and images of each walk completed.
October 2 Rye Harbour - Cliff End (Pett Level)
October 9 London Bridge to Vauxhall Bridge, return.
October 16 Hackney Marshes - Lee Valley to Limehouse Basin
October 23 Cutty Sark via Thames Barrier to Woolwich Arsenal
October 30 Norwich, ‘Nooks and Crannies’ city walk
November 6 Waterlink Way, Bell Green - Deptford Creek
November 13 The Saxon Way, Appledore - Rye
November 20 More Hall & Broomhead Reservoir, nr Sheffield
November 27 One Tree Hill and beyond
(December 4) Christmas Open Studios, SE23 3HG)
December 11 Anniversary Waltz: Guys Hospital to Havelock Walk via Kings College Hospital
And finally, while undergoing treatment (pre and post transplant) I wrote a blog which gave an account of my time in hospital. Copy and paste this link:
