Story

Hi my name is Scott and three years ago my friend and work colleague Mike Scott sadly lost his short battle with cancer. In January 2019 Mike was diagnosed with mesothelioma, a type of stomach cancer caused by asbestos. He was only given 6-8 months to live.

Mike was a keen mountain biker and he and I used to ride socially and race together over the past 6 or 7 years. Over the last 3 years Mike had competed in the MacAvalanche mountain bike enduro race at Glencoe (this years venue has been moved to the Nevis range on Aonach Mor). This was one of his favourite races and loved taking part in it. He even managed to compete in last years race whilst undergoing Chemotherapy. Ably assisted by our friend and work colleague Euan, Mike managed 2 of the 3 gruelling stages on the mountain and in typical Mike fashion was disappointed in himself that he wasn't able to complete the race. His illlness had got the better of him that day, but only a few days later Mike had to get a blood transfusion and the doctor said his levels were so low they were surprised he could walk let alone take part in a mtb race. Mike being Mike his attitude was, if he had had the blood transfusion before the race then he would have finished it!

This year me and a few of my friends have decided to race at the MacAvalanche in memory of Mike. On top of that I have decided that I will be cycling the 350 miles to and from the race to raise funds for two very special causes which greatly helped Mike and his family over the last year or so.

The two organisations are The Borders Macmillan cancer support and the Margaret Kerr unit at the Borders General Hospital.
