Story
We are Team Rebel Ramblers and we are officially announcing
our participation in the 2018 Mongol Rally to raise funds for our chosen
charity, Crosshaven RNLI.
Crosshaven Lifeboat Station (est. 2000) is located in Crosshaven, Co. Cork at 51°54’N, 8°18’W, just near the edge of Cork Harbour. Our nearest stations are Ballycotton to the East and Kinsale to the West. Our station boat is an Atlantic 85 “John and Janet” (B-892).
Crosshaven Lifeboat Station is one of 45 stations in Ireland and 237 in total run by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. The RNLI exists to save lives at sea and is entirely supported by voluntary contributions (Registered Charity Number CHY2678). Each lifeboat is crewed and run by volunteers who are always ready to put to sea 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year if required.
“The FE*K*N’
WHA’?” I hear you say….
The Mongol Rally, a 10,000km ramble across Europe and Asia
leaving from our humble roots on the Mountain Road in early July, taking off in
convoy from the start line in Prague on July 16th and rambling our
way along the ‘unroute’ and hopefully stumbling in one piece through Mongolia
to the finish line in Ulan Ude in Russia, on the shores of Lake Baikal, the
largest freshwater lake, by volume, in the world (even bigger than the Lough
apparently!) at some point in late August.
Sounds mad,
how does that work?
The rules of the rally are quite simple
- Small & Sh*t - You can take any
car, as long as it’s crap and with an engine of 1 litre or less. We have chosen
a lovely 2001 Nissan Micra. You’ll hear more about the car later but we bought
it from a lovely dealer in North Tipp but we ain’t no snitches so that’s enough
about our dealers. - On Your Own - I will put this one in
the words of the Adventurists, the organisers of the rally. - Raise some $$$ for charity – We will be
fundraising for Crosshaven RNLI, our local volunteer lifeboat service who work to
save lives at sea. See below for more about the great work which the RNLI do in local communities.
The important thing as we are funding the trip ourselves so all the monies
fundraised will be going to charity. So open them wallets and get donating….
.and make the donations generous because we WILL publicly shame you (I’m joking
we won’t obviously but just give us your feckin’ money and loads of it). - The ‘Un-route’ – Again in the spirit of
plagiarism I will revert to the Adventurists on this one: - “It’s brilliantly simple.
We give you a start point and a finish point but where you go or what you do in
between is entirely your steaming bag of adventuring magic. We recommend that
you don’t spend too long planning your route or poring over useful maps or
guidebooks. Find out what’s there when you arrive. Unleash the unexpected.”
Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving - they'll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they'll send your money directly to the charity. So it's the most efficient way to donate - saving time and cutting costs for the charity.
