About us
On Saturday 19 August myself, James and Penelope will be walking 'BIG RED WALK' in London, criss crossing over 8 bridges (approx. 10 miles) raising money and awareness for The Haemophilia Society.
As most of our friends and family know both James and Penelope have Haemophilia A. Whilst we knew before having Penelope that she would be a obligate carrier, we did not realise she would have low levels herself.
I contacted The Haemophilia Society shortly after Penelope had her levels tested at 3 months old. They have been incredibly kind to our family and provided a huge support network for us. We look forward to attending events and seeing familiar faces. Having two people in your family with a rare condition can make you feel quite isolated and alone but I have felt nothing but welcome, they have provided me with incredible support and strength. They are not just a charity to us but they have become our friends.
We would now like to raise funds and awareness for this fantastic charity so that they can continue with their hard work in helping others with bleeding disorders just like they have helped us.
What is Haemophilia?
Haemophilia is a rare condition in which the blood does not clot properly. People with Haemophilia lack a protein called a clotting factor, which works with platelets to stop bleeding at the site of an injury. This means the person tends to bleed for a longer time after an injury, and they are more susceptible to internal bleeding.
Girls cannot have Haemophilia?
Many people still refuse to acknowledge that girls/women can and do have Haemophilia. The lack of recognition of an obvious condition can make it difficult for women with Haemophilia to be taken seriously about their disease. We recently attended the "Talking Red" Conference which is trying to raise awareness for girls with bleeding disorders.
Who are the Haemophilia Society?
The Haemophilia Society are the only UK wide charity for everyone affected by a bleeding disorder, they are a community of members, supporters and healthcare professionals.
Their work enables people to:
• lead fulfilling lives
• make informed choices about their treatment and care
• support and inspire others to do the same.
So please if you can spare any amount please donate for a fantastic cause.
