We raise SUDEP & epilepsy risks awareness to prevent deaths & support those bereaved

Story

Welcome to my JustGiving Page!

I hope that after visiting, you’ll be inclined to donate what you can, big or small, to a cause that does some really great work with not only those who are managing an Epileptic condition but also the bereaved families of those who have been victims of SUDEP (Sudden Death in Epilepsy Patients).

As with a lot of these things, my motivation for this comes from a pretty painful place. Almost 11 years ago, enjoying a lie-in without a care in the world, I received a phone call that would lead to the shattering of my perspective on life as I knew it. Candy, an integral member of my circle of friends, one of the nicest girls one could ever hope to meet, and an all-round ‘good egg’, was being rushed to hospital having suffered from a particularly bad epileptic seizure. “No problem,” I thought, “it’s not as if it’s her first rodeo, yeah it’s bad but she’ll be fine in the end”. Wishful thinking, unfortunately, Candy wasn’t fine. Within the hour the next call came through, the call telling me that the Doctors couldn’t do anything and that our lives, in the blink of an eye, had been irreparably changed forever.

So, what do you do? Well, you pick up the pieces, muddle through as best you can, start to put things back together, and eventually sign yourself up to run a double marathon in memory of someone that left a permanent and positively untarnished mark on your life. This leads us to where you find yourself right now, my JustGiving page.

Having recently reintroduced myself to the world of long distance running as a cure all for the lockdown blues, the only logical next step was to commit to a 53 mile running event across the South Downs Way called Race to the King (The medal has got a sword in it so obviously I was going to throw money at them). The step after that? Raise some much-needed cash for a charity that is unwavering in its dedication to raising awareness of the risks of Epilepsy and Sudden Death in Epilepsy Patients, preventing deaths, and supporting bereaved families. The work they do aims to nullify the experience suffered by families like Candy’s through education, prevention and condition management.

So, there’s my ‘WHY’, and with a big enough ‘WHY’, you can handle almost any ‘HOW’.

Through the generosity, encouragement, and genuinely flattering support of my employers, Blackfield Associates, part of the STR Group, and the companionship of my running partner, Ian, I am proud to say that I have a support crew that is going to ensure I cross the finish line. No guarantees I’ll be in one piece, or even upright, but I’ll be crossing that finish line, just you mark my words!

The only thing left is you and your role in all of this. Some may even say that yours is the most important role of all, so please stick a few quid in, I promise it’s worth it.

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
