I was born with Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy, Meconium Aspiration Syndrome and Bi-lateral Pneumothorax.  I was very poorly.  I was transferred from the hospital I was born in to St Peters Hospital in Chertsey.  I was placed in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and had one to one care with a nurse and was given passive cooling treatment (cooling has been recognised as an effective intervention to decrease adverse neuro-developmental outcomes following perinatal asphyxia). I had15 different wires going into my body which included three chest drains, wires into my brain to check for seizures and bleeds, another travelling from my foot to my heart to continually monitor my heart function and a tube to help me breath and to feed me.   Gradually over the next 10 days I began to get better, wires were removed and treatment reduced. My mummy and daddy got to hold me for the first time 5 days after I was born.  St. Peter's hospital only had the medical equipment to treat one baby in my condition due to the extent of my illnesses.  If another baby had been born with the same conditions as me St. Peter's wouldn't have been able to take them.  I will still see my paediatric consultant for the next two years, but thanks to all those that treated me at St. Peter's I am making amazing progress.

Our aim is to raise enough money for St. Peter's to buy another machine that could provide passive cooling for an additional baby in the future and help save another precious life.

About the charity

Previously called the Early Births Fund, the fund was set up in 2003 with the aim of raising £250,000 to provide additional intensive care cots for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. This goal was achieved in 2 short years. The fund has continued on to support babies, families & staff on the NICU.
