Story
Bryn Jones has been a member of Thurnscoe Harmonic Male Voice Choir for over a decade. Singing brings him, the rest of the choir and those that are lucky enough to hear them a lot of joy.
In 2022, Bryn, who had been struggling with his memory, was screened for dementia and had an early diagnosis of the condition.
I have been a friend of Bryn's for almost 40 years, and so as a life stories film producer, I understand the importance of capturing stories and memories whilst we are well enough to do so.
I offered to capture Bryn's life story on film so his children, grand children and great grand children would always be able to hear his voice, his laughter, his stories and memories and yes...his singing too.
A few weeks later, we shot his film at his home in Mexborough. As his story unravelled, it became clear that his life story would not be complete without a few shots of him performing with the choir.
Bryn knew that the concert at Holy Trinity at Wentworth near Rotherham would be a good one to record, and so arrangements were made.
3 cameras, 2 x digital audio recorders were used in the recording, which features 22 songs by the choir. 22 sets of song lyrics to remember, that would be pretty impressive for someone without dementia...and Bryn isn't the only one in the choir on that journey.
Now, this was always intended for Bryn's personal use, but then the idea came about, to see if we could use the film of the concert to raise awareness of the importance of early screening and to raise a few pounds for Dementia UK at the same time. This is the result.
