Story
My daughter Phoebe Boswell, an artist, last year suffered a massive global rupture of her right eye which surgeons and staff at Moorfields Eye Hospital have done wonders, all under the NHS, to save. I am running the London Marathon because I want to thank them for their extraordinary work and I want to honour Phoebe for her inspirational courage and determination.
I have run a number of marathons and ultra marathons so I know the distance. But for me, at 71, when staggering to have a pee in the middle of the night sometimes seems like a challenge, this next one is looming up in the way Mount Everest must appear to someone who has spent the last few years strolling in the foothills.
But Phoebe has shown me how to transcend trauma and make something lasting and beautiful out of it.
With your encouragement let me try to run with the same determination and, thereby, thank and honour those who work to make us all have sight.
