Peter Taylor, who died on 5 March aged 53, was a leading planning solicitor in the West Midlands, and head of DLA Piper's International Planning Team.
Peter was a renowned planning solicitor advocate. Born and bought up in Mansfield, he graduated with a degree in law from the University of Birmingham and went on to study for his law finals at the Chester Law College.
Peter specialised in planning law for over 20 years. He was elected as a member of the Law Society's planning panel in 1992, and was also a legal associate of the RTPI. Peter was regularly ranked as one of the top planning solicitor advocates in UK Planning as well as in the legal rankings.
Peter thrived on advocating at planning appeals and kept those appearing against him on their toes.
Some of his favourite issues were the lawful implementation of planning consents and challenging authorities who failed to have a 5 year supply of housing, either of which he was more than happy to discuss over a pint.
Amongst his other specialities was representing residential developers, and he was well known amongst household names across the midlands. A pragmatic and astute lawyer, Peter was also a keen public speaker, delivering seminars to various groups interested in planning and sparking debate.
His love and enthusiasm for planning law was well known: Peter would regularly tell his colleagues from other disciplines that planning law was the only discipline worth practising!
He was warm and engaging and a pleasure to deal with, both in the course of his work and socially.
He was great company; his presence was a guarantee of a good evening and he was the person who people wanted to sit next to at dinner.
Outside of work he was a keen runner, and competed in dozens of events, including 18 marathons. He also loved watching sport, especially cricket and Nottingham Forest. He was a devoted husband and father.
Peter remained characteristically positive after his recent diagnosis of leukaemia, and his death has come as a shock to family, friends, colleagues and clients.
Peter will be greatly missed by all those who knew him. Donations can be made to The Nottinghamshire Bereavement Trust and Leukaemia Research.
