Imagine being told your toddler you thought was healthy, but perhaps slow to progress, in fact had a rare and devastating disability that would leave them needing lifelong 24/7 care. Rett syndrome changes lives irrevocably. With your support Rett UK is there from the beginning. #ToKnowHerIsToLoveHer

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

Myself and Liza will be running 10k through london on July 11th to raise money for a charity very close to me,  The Rett Syndrome association. My Niece Lauren is 11 years old and has had Rett's all her life.

Just to explain a bit about where your donation will be going to - Rett syndrome is a rare neurological disorder affecting mainly females and very few males. Although present at birth, it is usually undetected until major regression occurs at around one year of age, when children will lose acquired skills - this can be accompanied by distress and anxiety.

It is the most common genetic cause of severe disability in females. A large proportion of people with Rett syndrome have a mutation, or fault, on the MECP2 gene on the X chromosome.

Rett syndrome although genetic is not hereditary, it can occur in any family at any time. People with Rett syndrome have profound and multiple physical and learning disabilities and are totally reliant on others for support throughout their lives.

There are substantial communication and mobility issues for people with Rett syndrome. Most will not speak and, by adulthood, only 50% will walk. Epilepsy, chronic spinal curvature and breathing and feeding difficulties are also common features. However, we are increasingly aware of people with Rett syndrome living into their 50s and beyond.

As with any disability, the impact of the condition is not only upon the child but upon family and carers too. RSAUK seeks to support the person with Rett syndrome and the family together. They are all ‘living with Rett syndrome’.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

Thank you for your donation and all your support for this great cause.
