Tom's London Marathon 2023 Alzheimer's Fundraiser

London Marathon 2023 · 23 April 2023 ·
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
On 23rd April, 2023 I will be running the London Marathon in memory of my grandpa who passed away in 2019. My grandfather was an incredible man who loved to sail, among many other things. For those who knew him, he was a witty man who loved a good conversation, getting a kick out of winding you up. He suffered from a brutal, rare neurological condition called supranuclear palsy. After death his brain was donated to the Queen Square hospital for research where it was discovered he also suffered from Alzheimer's.
It is for these reasons that I have decided to partner up with Alzheimer's Research UK. 1 in 3 people born in the UK today will develop dementia in their lifetime. However, due to difficulty of diagnosis, diagnosis rates for over 65s is only 62% in 2022 meaning 38% of over 65s have gone undiagnosed, such as my grandfather.
Where will your donations go?
- Alzheimer's Research UK is currently funding 139 research projects in the UK and abroad, worth a total of £33.9 million.
- Alzheimer's Research UK's put £19.8m towards research in 2018/19.
- For every £1 they invested in research, their scientists have been able to attract a further £2.58 to continue their work.
