Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

It was our beautiful daughters 10th anniversary last year, and my intention was to walk a section of the Camino in her memory, however a bout of Covid prevented my ambition. Alma our youngest daughter was taken from us at the very young age of 24, a freak accident, in that she suffocated on her own vomit while in a deep sleep. She is very sadly missed by her two boys, sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles and her Mum and Dad, and indeed by everyone who knew her. Such was her personality and general persona.

So everything is now in place and I depart on the 21st., of May to Santiago De Compostela for a week long walk, (125Km) organised by Anam Cara and I finish on the 28th., of May.

I am going on this pilgrimage for a number of reasons, mainly for my daughter Alma, but also for the 1,527 (CSO figures 2020) families that experience the death of a son or daughter every year in Ireland. To ensure that Anam Cara continues to be satisfactorily funded, so that they can continue to offer the free of charge service they deliver, through bereavement specialists, and through peer to peer support and understanding, for all parents who have lost a child regardless of age. Unfortunately there is an unprecedented demand on the services of Anam Cara at present so they depend greatly on your financial contribution.

All of the money donated to this pilgrimage will go straight to Anam Cara as I am paying all of my own expenses, i.e., flights, accommodation, meals etc., etc.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving - they'll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they'll send your money directly to the charity. So it's the most efficient way to donate - saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

About the charity

Anam Cara is a national organisation founded by bereaved parents. We provide a range of bereavement support services throughout the 32 counties. More importantly, we offer peer support and understanding to families who have experienced the death of a child. Each year in Ireland about two thousand families experience the death of a son or daughter. For some, the death may have been expected through illness or a life-limiting condition. For others, it was unexpected through stillbirth, an accident, suicide or substance abuse. Anam Cara’s online and face to face services are available to all parents regardless of age or circumstances of their child’s death and are available for as long as necessary. At Anam Cara we focus on the similarities of our loss rather than the differences and provide a level of support and understanding that others cannot offer. Our bereavement as parents unites us. Anam Cara currently has nine active local groups meeting regularly throughout the country. All Anam Cara services are offered free of charge to bereaved parents and families, and as we do not receive government funding, we rely heavily on public fundraising to fund the costs of our local groups and events. We are hugely grateful to any support you can give us. Thank you!
