Story
Thank you for visiting our JustGiving page.
Because we'll have been married for four decades in August, we decided to sign up for this year's 40th Great North Run in aid of the Motor Neurone Disease Association.
When this iconic half-marathon had to be cancelled due to the Covid-19 emergency, we dreamed up a slightly mad alternative 40th anniversary fundraiser: on Saturday 1st August we completed a three-legged 8-mile circuit of Holy Island (Lindisfarne) in memory of the legendary triathlete, children's author and so much more, our younger son David Greaves, who died from Motor Neurone Disease in September 2016.
There was quite a small field for this ground-breaking new tri-legathon: just the two of us! With Dave's indomitable auntie Cath Baker as our caddy, roadie and events manager.
Achieving our fundraising target of £2000 will help the David Greaves MNDA Tribute Fund reach £100,000 - a fitting tribute to David's awesome courage, strength and determination. For more about David's own story, visit www.stanagepress.com
Thanks to the fantastic support we've received from so many friends and family - not to mention the kindness of several generous unknown walkers we encountered while doing our lap of Lindisfarne - we're very nearly over the line as far as our fundraising target is concerned, and Dave's Tribute Fund will finally pass the £100K mark!
There is at present no known cure for Motor Neurone Disease, a fatal, rapidly-progressive disease affecting the brain and spinal cord. MND attacks the nerves that control movement, and in time removes the capacity to walk, to talk, to swallow food, and eventually even to breathe. The average life expectancy of those living with this terminal condition is around two years, or even less.
