Debbie's little walk in the Yorkshire Dales

Alzheimer’s Society are working towards a world where dementia no longer devastates lives. They do this by giving help to those living with dementia today and by providing hope for the future by campaigning to make dementia the priority it should be and funding ground-breaking research.
On 19th July, I’m going to walk 26 miles in the Yorkshire Dales, following a pretty tough route that includes big hills, mountains and rocks. It is expected to take between 9 (won’t be me!) and 13 hours. I’m hoping for something in between. I’m not entirely sure I was sane when I signed up but this is for my mum 🩷
At the end of June, I had to make the heartbreaking decision to place mum into a nursing home. We suspected dementia in the summer of 2023, but she refused tests. On 2nd September 2024, the formal diagnosis was delivered…mum has Alzheimer’s disease and Vascular Dementia. From the symptoms and behaviours she is now presenting, we estimate she is near to or already at stage 6. There is no cure for Alzheimer’s or Vascular Dementia, and the progression is devastating, not only for those living with dementia but for the families watching their loved ones change before their eyes as the disease takes them. They call dementia ‘the long goodbye’. The change in my mum in just 12 months, in just the last 6 months and just the last 3 months has been heartbreaking.
In 2017 I ran my first half marathon for my Nan in support of Alzheimer’s. This time it’s for mum 💔
I would be eternally grateful for any and all donations to Alzheimer’s to help find a cure, to rid the world of this truly devastating disease.
Much love and Thank You 🩷
