Story

Did you know every year in the UK there are 150,000 cases of Sepsis, resulting in a staggering 44,000 deaths - more than bowel, breast and prostate cancer combined. Neither did I until I was affected by it.

On the 19th of March 2015, just 11 days after I gave birth to my beautiful boy I became very unwell and was affected by sepsis. At first I thought it was just the after affects of giving birth but my husband knew something was wrong and made me ring the maternity unit as I was still under their care. They told me to come in straight away and after taking my observations I knew something wasn't right. It wasn't until 4days later, after being giving lots of iv antibiotics, that I asked why I was unwell. That was the first time I had heard the word Sepsis and the nurse said I was very lucky and if I had left it 24hours it may have been a different story.

I still didn't know much about it so I posted on a mums forum to see if anyone had been through similar and that was when someone guided me to the UK Sepsis trust website.

It took me roughly 6months to recover both emotionally and physically. I was in the process of finding fundraising events to sign up to for the charity when unfortunately on the 15th of October 2016 Sepsis reared its ugly head again. After another 3 day stay in hospital I was well enough to return home. This time I felt alone and very depressed. I couldn't stop crying and needed support. The UK Sepsis Trust was a great help for supporting me and after speaking to a qualified nurse over the phone about my worries I felt in a better place.

Because of everything the charity has done we would like to do something in return. That is why I am taking part in Trekfest with my husband Aaron to raise funds and awareness for something not many know about but affects a huge amount of people.

Sepsis accounts for 48,000 deaths annually in the UK, that’s more than breast, bowel and prostate cancer put together. Sepsis is what happens when our immune system overreacts to an infection. Symptoms initially present as flu like but can rapidly deteriorate into a life threatening condition.
