Story
I've been a registered nurse for 37 years (I know, I know, I don’t look that old). In my career I am proud to have worked with so many inspiring people who give so much of themselves to help other people on a daily basis. I have seen nurses not only help people and their families to recover from illness and trauma, but to help them negotiate things the rest of the world doesn’t like thinking about – cancer, disfigurement, depression, death, poverty, loss and much, much more. Nurses really are in there at the coal face from birth to death. Nurses also create whole services and systems to help individuals, communities and populations. They change lives. I don’t think people actually realise how valuable nurses are. I know though, because I’m lucky to have worked with a lot of them. One of these people is my colleague Christopher who as well as nursing, in his spare time organises a charity, Eating Stones, to help vulnerable people in Kenya. This includes funding nurse training. It costs £3500 to train a nurse in Kenya. This nurse will go on to improve lives in their local community in many ways for many years. I’m at the end of my nursing career now; I would like to hand on the baton to my younger colleagues. So, I’m supporting trainee nurses in Kenya by doing the Yorkshire (where else?) 3 Peaks Challenge on 27th April with some of my amazing colleagues. I would like to say my target is £3500 to fund a whole new nurse but this may be a little over optimistic! Aim high, why not?! If you can even give £2 to my Just Giving Fund it will be a little bit to help on the way! Thank you so much!
