Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia and may contribute to around 60-70% of cases. There are almost one million people living with dementia in the UK. This is believed to rise over 1.6 million by 2050. According to the WHO there are currently more than 55 million people living with dementia worldwide, and there are nearly 10 million new cases every year.

By supporting the Alzheimer’s Society you support their vision to demonstrate best practice in dementia care and support, to provide the best advice and support to anyone dealing with dementia and to influence the state and society to enable those affected by dementia to live as they wish to live. Indeed a very good cause to contribute to.

I decided to undertake this fundraising event since I experienced the impact of Alzheimer's on my family back in Germany. My grandmother spent her last years in a care home suffering from Alzheimer's. And my father  who is now  in his 80s also suffers from Alzheimer's and lives in a care home in Germany. After my Mum's death three years ago his dementia became very obvious, with her not being around to help him out. Although he is well looked after, his disease impacts on my brother and me in many ways.

My father used to be a very active person and couldn't sit still. He loved hiking in the mountains, and I did my very first 30-mile hike with my grandmother and father. So I thought a 26-mile charity trek would be just the right thing, despite my flat feet and bunions, to make a statement and support the vital work of the Alzheimer's Society.
