Story
Our team in Victoria Falls is going to be participating in the Victoria Falls Marathon any way we can to raise support for the African Lion and Environmental Research Trust!
Volunteers and staff will be volunteering at the marathon PLUS some will be running the 7km or half-marathon route in support of ALERT!
We're asking for your support on July 3rd as we raise awareness for the plight of Africa's lions and support ALERT's efforts to protect Africa's iconic cat!
Want to know more about ALERT...?
According to the IUCN, lions numbers have declined 42% in the past 21 years (1993 to 2014); there are probably less than 20,000 remaining. We can and must act now to save Africa’s lions.
ALERT believes that for lions to survive, we must look at each habitat as a complex system that incorporates the needs of both lions and people. Further, if support for conservation is to be built, conservation efforts must generate positive benefits to stakeholders. To this end, ALERT has developed a multi-disciplinary approach to conservation we term responsible development with five programme focus areas; in situ lion conservation, education, conserving biodiversity, social development, and ex situ lion conservation.
By uniting with community and policy makers, non-governmental organizations, scientists and business leaders, we believe the best solutions can be proposed to deal with both the underlying causes of the threats to lions, as well as the challenges those causes create.
