Going the Extra Mile is a Huge Leap of Faith!

My name is Vicky Jones and I am the Fundraising Assistant at The College of St. Barnabas.  I have been working here for just over a year and believe the College is a truly exceptional place. 

The College of St. Barnabas is a charity run retirement and nursing home for Anglican clergy, church workers and their spouses, it is located in Lingfield, Surrey.

In retirement it is a sad fact that many elderly people do not have the provisions to afford to keep a roof over their heads, and they face the final years of their lives living in poverty; frail elderly men and women with feelings of loneliness and depression.  This is where the College helps.  The College will not turn people away due to their financial status.  
It has been providing care for poor, vulnerable and infirm elderly for over 100 years. Looking after the frail, isolated and sick elderly men and women who would in many circumstances be homeless.

Of course for the College to help they need support.  Every year there is a shortfall in the costs for residents care and the College does not receive government grants or financial support from The Church of England.  The College simply cannot cover an individual’s living and care costs alone.  This is why I have decided to do something extreme.... I have agreed to (despite my mind and body fiercely telling me I must be crazy!) Jump from the skies to raise some much needed funds which will benefit the lives of the elderly here who have given so much for others. 

I want to do something personally to help, to raise money, awareness and hopefully encourage others to do the same.  The College of St. Barnabas is really a wonderful place and is the home to some amazing people.  People who have dedicated their lives to the service of others, in both this country and abroad and who have achieved tremendous things.  Now in their old age is it not right that they should be looked after and cared for the way they have cared for others? 

What exactly will I be doing? I will step on board a plane and be flown up into the blue where I will do something that is against all logic..... It’s shattering my nerves just thinking about it.... But despite being afraid of heights I will Jump! (or be pushed by my tandem instructor!!) 

Most people jump 10,000ft for charity but it will be from 15,000ft that I will plummet through the air and under the forces of gravity reach speeds of 120mph before the parachute will open and I pray bring me safely back down to earth.  I will be taking a heart pumping, nerve wracking leap, doing something out of the ordinary to help a charity that really does do so much to help elderly people in need.
