Story

This Summer Whole Crop Marketing are participating in a charity bike ride to raise money and show our support for our chosen charity the National Society fo Phenylketonuria (N.S.P.K.U)

What is PKU?

PKU (Phenylketonuria) is a rare inherited condition in which there is a build-up of phenylalanine in the body, a natural substance and a building block of protein. About 1 in 10,000 babies in the UK have this condition which makes them unable to process a substance in their food. Without treatment, PKU has the potential to become serious, it can damage the brain and nervous system, which can lead to learning disabilities later on in life.

It is recommended that all babies should be tested for PKU through the heel prick blood test because an early diagnosis enables the correct treatment to begin the early stages of life.

What does The N.S.P.K.U do?

Actively promotes the care and treatment of those with PKU, working closely with medical professionals in the UK and sponsoring their research. It organises events such as conferences and study days, publishing a wide range of resources including food lists for parents and holding local support groups for families and those affected with PKU.
