For many years since I was small and took holidays in Northumberland with my family I have been amazed by Hadrian’s Wall. How did they manage to build the Wall and all the forts and milecastles along the way without all the heavy machinery that we rely on these days? For the last few years I have had a desire to walk the length of the wall and during August 2016 I decided I was definitely going to do it.

On 13th September 2016 my husband, Lawrence, collapsed and was rushed to the Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital in Cramlington where they saved his life. After a two night stay in hospital and various check-ups in local hospitals he made a good recovery and 6 months later he returned to work, all be it in a different role.

So then I thought. Why don’t I walk the Wall for Charity?

The charity I have chosen is ‘Bright Northumbria’ (registered charity number 1083122)

I would like to raise money to use in the local hospitals. When I was with Lawrence watching the doctors save his life I was amazed at the different techniques they used and the various scans he had to get the diagnosis of an unprovoked sub-massive pulmonary embolism (large blood clots on his lungs that caused damage to his heart. His heart has since repaired itself) and it was this fast treatment that saved his life. I really cannot fault the NHS in all they did for him.

I am planning on starting my walk of the Hadrian’s Wall Path at Bowness-on-Solway and walk east to Segedunum in Wallsend. Lawrence will drop me off on 16th June 2018 and I shall walk the 84 miles on my own and carry everything I need. I shall overnight in campsites along the way. I am planning on being quite fluid and take each day as it comes. Some days I will walk further than others. Ultimately I want to enjoy this and raise as much money as I can.

I shall monitor my progress using my GPS watch and I shall publish my progress, photos and thoughts when I return.
