RNLI volunteer lifeboat crews provide a 24-hour search and rescue service all around the UK and Ireland, while lifeguards keep a careful watch on the UK’s busiest beaches. RNLI lifesaving and drowning prevention depend on supporter fundraising and the generous donations that you and others give.

Story

I'm riding for three days with Rad and Nick who have been cycling around Britain visiting every RNLI Lifeboat station along the way in an attempt to raise £70,000 for the RNLI. In July they will be on their last leg, heading back into London where it all began for their triumphant return having completed an epic journey around England, Wales and Scotland.

To welcome Rad and Nick back to London the City of London Lifeboat Committee is organising a group of cyclists (to ride with them for the last 3 days of their ride. This will involve joining them at the Great Yarmouth Lifeboat Station and riding with them along the coast back into London. All funds raised will go to the Tower Lifeboat Station.

In 2015, RNLI lifeboats launched 8,228 times around the coast of the UK and the Republic of Ireland (ROI) rescuing 7,973 people (including 348 lives saved).

Last year, the RNLI launched a lifeboat, on average, 13 times a day, down from 23 times in 2014, and their volunteer crew spent a collective 229,070 hours at sea on service and exercise – which is just over 26 years in total.

The Lifeboats on the Thames launched 853 times last year; rescued 284 people; and saved 22 lives.

Tower Station (our local lifeboat station and the focus of our fundraising) remained the busiest station in the entire RNLI network of 236 stations in the UK and the ROI with 465 launches; 90 people rescued; and15 lives saved.

The combined Lifeboats on the Thames (Tower, Chiswick (the second busiest in the RNLI network), Gravesend and Teddington) performed just over 10% of all RNLI launches in 2015 in just over 5% of all the collective RNLI hours spent on service and exercise. These are sound illustrations of the significance of the Lifeboats on the Thames.

The Thames Lifeboats are a crucial safety feature of the Thames and are all funded entirely from charitable donations. Please help support this vital emergency service.
