We are Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity. We stop at nothing to help give seriously ill children childhoods that are fuller, funner and longer. Because we believe no childhood should be lost to illness.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

On Saturday 22nd April I will embark on an adventure of a lifetime – by cycling alone to the Arctic Circle.
I have been planning this trek for many years and hope to raise money for Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital. Without the expert care of this world famous hospital's medics I almost certainly would not be here now.
When I was three years old I was diagnosed at the hospital with Hypoglycaemia, a condition which means my blood sugar levels are in constant danger of dropping, which could lead to unconsciousness, coma and death without swift medical attention.
In April this year I will spend three months cycling 4,300 miles to the northern tip of Europe from my home in Chelmsford, passing through Holland, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland.
I will complete the journey unassisted and will carry everything I need for survival – tent, clothes, food, drink, survival kit – on my bike.
My journey will be a greater challenge as I must manage my hypoglycaemia by ensuring my blood sugar levels do not drop. The physical demands of covering many miles every day and passing through large areas of wilderness without access to medical assistance means I must be extremely careful in how I plan my trip.

I will start my journey from my home in Essex, to my friend's sauna in the forests of Finland. I am particularly looking forward to seeing Scandinavia's Viking and Prehistoric past, taking time to soak up the region's history, mainly of the Viking age, with a few peat bog men thrown in too.

Another highlight will be riding the Hardangervidda mountain plateau which is in between Oslo and Bergen. In Bergen I will be treated to a musical delight, a collaborative music piece called Hugsja, which combines indigenous and contemporary music accompanied by instruments from the stone age to present day.

Later I will reach Nordkapp, the most northern point in mainland Europe, before turning my handlebars towards Finland. I will ride into the wilderness Lapland, where I will be taking in the Sami culture, passed lakes and plenty of forests. After about 4,300 miles I will arrive at my friend's in Jokela, just north of Helsinki towards the end of July, in time for a sauna and beer in the sun.

By taking on this challenge I hope to raise £5,000 for the hospital which saved my life. It would mean the world to me if you could support my efforts by sponsoring me.
