Story

Welcome to our JustGiving page where you can donate to support The Benevolent.

UPDATE: Sunday 26th September - We did it! Weather was fabulous and we are both fully intact, if aching a little. Photos soon. We learnt much more about our cause through some great people who work for the Benevolent and were walking with us - most impressive! Thanks so much to all who have donated so far ...

Hoped-for-Weather Conditions in North Wales on 25th September 2010: Mild, occasionally sunny, with a light breeze, no expected rainfall, good visibility.
Why? Because Wink and Brett will be hiking up Snowdon, along with around 25 other professionals from the UK wine, spirit and beer trade. We will be doing it, whatever the weather!
Our Challenge:
Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa in Welsh) is the highest mountain in Wales (and higher than any in England), at 1,085m (3,650 feet) above sea level (and remember much of England and Wales lies at sea level). You can reach the summit by train, but surely it's much better to walk it? We've been offered the chance to do a day's walk - around 800m vertical rise for about 6km (4 miles) - with a guide, to raise money for our industry's charity. It should take 5 - 7 hours including breaks.
Wink, living part of the year in the Alps, is used to walking in the mountains although usually only does 1 - 3 hours walks with 200 - 500m vertical rise and only in fine weather! A severe asthmatic as a child, she is happy, at 52 to be pretty fit. Over the past 5 years, she has encouraged parter Brett (66) to walk more and they've enjoyed many mountain walks with gentle climbs, but never of this distance or height. What's more they are used to walking in the crisp Alpine air, not in the notoriously damp air of North Wales. It will be a challenge, but one we are really looking forward to. We plan to spend a couple of days in the area to make the most of the scenery and are promised a good dinner (with good wine, we trust) at the end of our long day.
