Story

We lost my lovely Mum, Winnie, suddenly on Saturday 15th July. In remembrance of her, we organised a local remembrance service in Aberlady & have been collecting donations for The Bethany Christian Trust.

Winnie used to love meeting with family & friends at The Bethany charity shop & cafe,  in Causewayside, Edinburgh. I have many memories of “having a good rake around” for treasures & trinkets with my Mum followed by a lunch and tea/coffee & cake, the homemade pavlova was so good!

My Mum knew all the volunteers & staff & would love chatting away to them. Due to her/our regular visits, they all knew Winnie too! She was so interested in others & cared about their lives. She wanted to help others & really supported this charity.

People have given really generously at her remembrance service, but I felt I would share this incase there are any others who may wish to donate in memory of my lovely Mum. I miss her so much, the kindest, most loving Mother, Grandmother (Mop to Freya & Poppy) and friend.

I took some notes of memories & qualities that my friends & I have shared about my Mum…

Memories of my Mum

Incredibly kind - she would give you all she had.

Sending cards, letters and gifts. Her memory for dates was amazing.

A birthday brain memory machine! She remembered dates to celebrate others so well.

So interested in others & found the best in people.

“You look like a film star” was one of her catch phrases. “Between you, me & the gate post” “ it was just like a black comedy”

We’ll have all the fun of the fair” (Lou reminded me)

A charity shop rake around and a Bethany shop cafe lunch.

I was  “wee Wonder Woman” even when it was embarrassing at school but I still loved it.

Trinkets & sentimental ornaments

Being “Mop” alongside “Pop” and loving her grand daughters, Freya (10) and Poppy (8)  so much.

Pride in her family. She loved us all & my friends.

Her amazing handwriting. The curves & curls in her letters.

Grateful & guilty for everything and anything

L’Air du Temps, her favourite perfume. Rachael remembers her like a little bird, my little dove with some much love.

Marshmallow party hats & crispy cake queen

Christmas cakes so full of fruit & brandy with marzipan & icing so thick you could hardly cut through it.

Sparkling scarfs & her engagement ring of green tourmaline.

Bright colours & a beautiful big smile.

A Julie Andrew’s beauty in her 60’s blonde short hair.

She drove a Vespa scooter 🛵 giving my Dad a lift and breaking down coming back from Edinburgh. She went to Denmark on her scooter in 1961. Who with? I wish I remembered or asked her. My Auntie Vi said that Uncle Arthur remembers it was a green Vespa.

A strong faith in God & she loved candles!

A relationship builder with all.

Sunday school teacher & play group leader.

Learning Montessori play & So fun & playful.

The Archers music blasting in the kitchen & Songs of praise on a Sunday.

Finding political scandals “absolutely dreadful!”

Watching Joseph and his technical Dreamcoat & The sound of music. We loved a musical!

Walking together & cafe

Comfort with holding people close.

“Oh my darling girl”

She would tell you “you are wonderful”

She would stroke your arm so lovingly & David would say…Don’t stroke me, I’m not a cat!’

Her driving us all over Edinburgh

Forgiving and faithful

Her smile & laugh made you happy

So patient and kind

People radiated towards Winnie.
