London Marathon 2019 · 28 April 2019 ·

Sarcoidosis is a rare disease and has poor information, support and little research for finding a cure. We work to change that. Our 4 goals; information, support, awareness and research. We receive no government money and are reliant on your generosity. Every donation makes a huge difference.

Story

What is sarcoidosis?

It's a little known condition, that causes small patches of red and swollen tissue, called granulomas, to develop in the organs of the body. It can affect the skin, eyes, joints, nervous system, heart and other body parts. For some the symptoms can subside by themselves, for others it can be chronic and life threatening.

My aim in running for SarcoidosisUK is to raise funds to contribute to their main aims: research and support for sufferers. The research budget is doubled by the British Lung Foundation, so funds raised will make a difference in finding a cure for sarcoidosis.

Importantly I’d also like to help raise some awareness. The lack of knowledge and clear information around sarcoidosis means that misdiagnosis is common. So although it’s relatively rare, true numbers of those affected are hard to estimate.

I only found out about the condition when my dad, Dave, was diagnosed - this was after years of being misdiagnosed with stress. Sarcoidosis is different in every case and for my dad it affected his lungs, and notably led to increased shortness of breath over time. Having shortness of breath led to extreme fatigue, dizziness, a weakening of muscles, severe weight loss, and reduced immune system. SarcoidosisUK aims to raise general awareness, and this could help many people, like my dad, to be diagnosed and receive support earlier.

Raising funds and awareness for SarcoidosisUK at London Marathon seems particularly fitting. My dad enjoyed running in his youth - him wearing cut-off jean shorts and a leather belt (none of this high tech gear). He knew I was getting into running, and was pleased. He also loved London, and I know he'd be chuffed I was doing this. I'll be remembering my dad, and happy times with him, and I most certainly won't be complaining about shortness of breath!

If you can donate, any amount, that's wonderful and appreciated - thank you!

SarcoidosisUK is a tiny charity that exists to provide support and information for people with sarcoidosis, and to fund research into a cure for the condition. It is currently the among the world’s largest sarcoidosis research funders, and is passionate about helping to find a cure. SarcoidosisUK is dedicated to funding at least one major piece of research per year, and will continue to do this until a cure is found. Please donate - we rely on your support to keep going!
