Brooklands is unique. The world’s first purpose-built motor racing circuit, constructed at Weybridge, Surrey in 1907, was more than a great sporting arena. Brooklands was the birthplace of British motorsport and aviation, home of Concorde and the site of many engineering and technological achievements throughout eight decades of the 20th century. Visitors to the museum drink in the atmosphere that reveals the secrets of Brooklands - the place where the great British adventure in speed and altitude all began. The Museum displays a wide range of Brooklands-related motoring and aviation exhibits ranging from giant racing cars, motorcycles and bicycles to an unparalleled collection of Hawker and Vickers/ BAC-built aircraft, including the only Concorde with public access in South East England. The Brooklands Museum Trust is an independent charitable trust whose aims are to preserve and interpret the heritage of Brooklands and to use that heritage to inspire and educate future generations.

Story

In a recession, desperate times call for desperate measures. With corporate donors non existent the staff at Brooklands Museum realise that it is down to them to fundraise to keep this amazing place going through very tough times. A marathon runner I am not and I do not have a head for heights so flinging myself out of a plane, even for the good of the Museum, is not an option. Therefore several of us have decided to ask people to sponsor us to spend the night at work. This may sound like no great feat until you take into account that the museum site is one of the most haunted places in Surrey. Here is an edit from an article written on the subject....

Brooklands Museum is famous for both its motoring and aviation history... Brooklands is also known for something else which is not so easy to explain. There is a ghostly atmosphere on the overgrown and semi-derelict track and there have been many reports of strange occurances such as doors opening and shutting of their own accord, the sound of footsteps , engines revving-up and tyres squealing at 2am in the morning. Much harder to explain are sightings of a figure dressed in white overalls and a helmet seen by some to walk across a carpark only to disappear before their eyes. One particular disturbing incident was witnessed by a young boy living nearby who saw 'The figure of a man staggering around with his head half hanging off'. The boy was so severely shocked that he had to be given medical treatment. In the past many drivers have been killed after driving off the side of the banked track and also during World War II the RAF were based here and the ghosts of airmen and ground personnel have also been encountered.

And, as if just staying here isn't going to be scary enough we have decided to pick a suitable date, worthy of such an occasion.... Halloween weekend!!!!!!  So why are we doing this ...

Brooklands is an independent museum and a registered charity that does not receive any funding from the Government or local authority. The Museum therefore depends heavily upon donations to carry out its work. Brooklands Museum is an amazing place steeped in history, preserving the past to educate future generations. Visit the Musuem or look on our website www.brooklandsmuseum.com and see why we think this place is so special. Please sponsor me and pass this onto friends, family and colleagues so they can do the same.
