Story
When Steve and I first visited the Frances Perkins Center in Maine, we were astounded by how much Frances Perkins accomplished in her years of public service. And, then, we were surprised and dismayed that neither of us fully appreciated her significance in American social and economic history. One would have thought our school history books would have taught us about how Frances was the driving force behind New Deal policies that improved the lives of millions of people during the Great Depression and how the programs she created continue to this very day to advance social justice and economic security! Got Social Security? Thank Frances Perkins. Work 40 hours a week rather than 56? Thank Frances Perkins. Receiving or have received Workers Compensation? Thank Frances Perkins. Enjoy a safe work environment and minimum wage? Yes, again, thank Frances Perkins. And the list goes on.
Please join us in preserving her Homestead to become a place-based education center where all can come learn about Frances Perkins and consider how we can continue to build a socially just and economically secure society. NOW is the time to make this happen. Thank you.
