Story

Please dig deep and help me raise money to support the Building Bridges project run by Tamil aid. This is close to my heart as I visited the orphanages in Sri Lanka when I went to visit.

Building Blocks is a charity project set up with the aim of rebuilding/building orphanages in war-torn areas. These children have not only been through traumatic experiences, but have witnessed situations that no child should ever be faced with, which have ultimately left them dealing with the biggest loss in their young lives – their parent(s). Our aim is to not only provide a safe haven for these children but to provide them with the medical, optical, dental and educational provisions to aid their well-being.  We can achieve this by raising funds and sending it to local project co-ordinators but the Building Blocks team want to play a bigger role than this. Not only will we be involved in fundraising towards our projects in the UK, but we will also be travelling to these areas to see for ourselves how we can help, how we are helping, and follow the progress of our projects. We hope that by providing the right kind of on-going support, not only will it help these children but whole communities, bringing them together and encouraging them to be each other’s strength.

At present, Building Blocks is in the process of purchasing some land in a region near the Killinochi area in Northern Province of Sri-Lanka. This particular piece of land has a particular significance as it was previously occupied by Chencholai Orphanage, which was destroyed during the final phases of the war, killing many, and leaving many displaced.  It was this story that led to the development of Building Blocks hence our maiden project begins here. In October 2012, the Building Blocks team will be making the journey to the Chencholai site to carry out a risk assessment and assist in the project planning of a new orphanage, HOD (Health Optical Dental) and IT centre. The team which consists of various skills and backgrounds are volunteering their time and expertise to ensure that Building Blocks can achieve its aims in the best possible way. This means collaborating with registered charities both here in the UK and those in Sri-Lanka, such as Tamil Aid, as well as local businesses and communities who know the area and are best positioned to assist us to help them. In addition to this, during each visit we are hoping to educate the children on the importance of hygiene, keeping fit, healthy eating and other aspects of modern life that will better equip them in their adult lives and future generations, as well as provide basic health checks - things children here in the UK take for granted.

Its a great cause and feel free to ask me more about it.
