This September, I will be taking part in the Boston Rowing Marathon, a 50km race from Lincoln to Boston in a single scull to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

Like millions across the country, my life has been impacted by cancer, with family members and close friends having to endure gruelling treatment after the shock of a diagnosis. But whereas I have been exceptionally lucky in seeing them beat the disease, there are countless more who have had their loved ones taken from them long before their time.

Having returned to rowing in recent years, I wanted to challenge myself in a way I have never done before and raise money for a cause very close to my heart, helping to fund groundbreaking research that could save so many lives. 

This will not be the first time I'll have raced in the event but it will be the first time without a crew to help me get down the course, a very isolating experience that will take a different level of mental fortitude to succeed. To give myself the best chance, I have given myself three months to prepare and improve my fitness to complete the 50km race on my own. 

Being able to raise money for a great cause is a massive motivator and I hope that by reading this, you might be inspired to sponsor me. Even if it is just a few pounds, every little helps!
