The Colon Challenge · 5 June 2019

Our charity supports research, education & innovation at St Mark’s, the UK’s national bowel hospital. The projects we support have driven clinical improvements for patients living with complex bowel diseases, and enhanced disease understanding.

Story

  • Sadly Colon Cancer kills more than 16,000 people every year in the UK,  someone In the UK is diagnosed with the illness every 15 minutes.
  • There are around 41,700 new bowel cancer cases in the UK every year, that's more than 110 every day.

  • Bowel cancer is the 4th most common cancer in the UK, accounting for 12% of all new cancer cases.

  • In males in the UK, bowel cancer is the 3rd most common cancer, with around 23,100 new cases in 2015.

  • In females in the UK, bowel cancer is the 3rd most common cancer, with around 18,700 new cases in 2015.

Abbey Pynford is raising money to support what we believe to be vital research into the prevention and cure of bowel cancer, which is being carried out at the UK’s specialist centre for bowel disease, St Mark’s Hospital, Harrow.

Our Chairman, Paul Kiss, was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2015.  After extensive personal research, he adopted a treatment protocol consisting of both alternative and traditional medicines, which was supported by his consultant at St Mark's.  Paul has now been cancer-free for over a year and believes that the cancer will not return.

Paul is now keen to help fund research at St Mark's that could help others like him in the future:

“The research project that we are supporting will improve our understanding of the body’s ability to fight cancer through its own defence mechanisms, as boosting a patient’s immune system can improve their ability to fight bowel cancer.

Paul has not only shelved his disdain for road bikes (he’s an off-road fanatic) to take part in the 2019 Colon Challenge (set up in 2014 by a bowel cancer survivor - and friend - of Paul’s), he has also recruited six of his colleagues to join him in the fundraising and on the ride.

We at Abbey Pynford earnestly hope that you will feel encouraged to support this worthwhile cause by donating either to Paul’s fundraising page or to the page of one of his
colleagues.

Thank you.
