Story
On the 9th of November I will be embarking on an 18 day trek to Everest base camp in aid of The Royal British Legion. Their mission is to offer welfare support to veterans, serving soldiers and their families. This charity is close to my heart coming from a military family myself.
Everest base camp is 5364 meters above sea level and about 65% of people are able to complete the challenge. This challenge is graded as extreme due to the unpredictable weather patterns. The average temp is -17 degrees Celsius so I’ll be relying on specialist equipment to get me through.
The EBC trek is taken at a measured pace in order to acclimatise sufficiently to the harsh environment. Acclimatising is very important as it will help prevent the chances of altitude sickness caused by decreased oxygen concentration in the blood due to lower atmospheric pressure. This can lead to dizziness, nausea, shortness of breath and fatigue; untreated it can lead to life threatening conditions effecting the brain and lungs.
To increase my chances of success, over the next 6 months I will be attempting to increase the capacity and efficiency of my bodies cardiovascular system and improve the endurance of my muscles by building repetitive movement strength. I will do this by adopting a vigorous exercise regime of cardiovascular and weight bearing exercises in order to train for the event.
I will be funding the whole trip myself so 100% of the donations will go directly to the charity the trip is more poignant because i’ll be there on the 11th of November which is Remembrance day.
