Story
On 28th Feb my amazing Mum was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré Syndrome after 2 x trips to out of hours GP's and 3 x trips to A&E. She lost proper feeling in her hands, legs, face and bladder, had severe back and arm pain, her face went droopy on one side, she slurred her words & she was unable to chew, eat or drink properly and couldn't walk straight. She was very lucky in some ways as her neurologist said that had she have waited any longer she would have ended up in ICU with breathing problems. Quite frankly, she scared the living hell out of all of us! She has had 5 plasma exchanges which have worked really well and thankfully she is on the road to recovery! She's an inspirational, determined woman who has remained positive and is working really hard on her physio exercises to regain her strength so that she can run around with her 3 grandchildren.
In my infinite wisdom I chose to do something 'inspirational' to not only raise money for GAIN UK but also to raise awareness of the illness as so few people have ever heard of it - so I have signed up to do the Cardiff Half Marathon. Although I've always loved running, I'm only just getting back in to it after having Amelia so this will be some challenge for me to get fit enough to do it!

From the GAIN UK website - Guillain-Barré syndrome is a rare autoimmune condition affecting the peripheral nervous system, usually leading to temporary or long-term paralysis. Around 80% of those with GBS will make a good recovery, but between 5-10% of people will not survive and the other 10-15% may be left with severe mobility or dexterity issues. GAIN helps people understand and manage both acute and chronic variants of the syndrome, raises awareness, and promotes clinical and non-clinical research into these conditions.
